Martha van der Beek promoveerde op 20 november 2012 aan de Universiteit Leiden op het proefschrift getiteld ‘Herpesvirus infections in immunocompromised patients: treatment, treatment failure and antiviral resistance’. Promotor was prof. dr. A.C.M. Kroes en copromotor was dr. A.C.T.M. Vossen. Hieronder zijn de belangrijkste bevindingen van het onderzoek weergegeven.
