Patiënten met sikkelcelziekte kunnen worden genezen met een allogene hematopoëtische stamceltransplantatie. De introductie van niet-myeloablatieve conditioneringsschema’s heeft deze behandeling ook mogelijk gemaakt voor volwassen sikkelcelpatiënten. Door beperkte beschikbaarheid van HLA-identieke verwante donoren en de slechte resultaten van transplantaties met stamcellen van HLA-identieke niet-verwante donoren, is er de afgelopen jaren veel onderzoek gedaan naar het verbeteren van de uitkomsten van haplo-identieke donorstamceltransplantaties. In dit overzichtsartikel worden de bevindingen van een recentelijk gepubliceerde fase II-studie over niet-myeloablatieve haplo-identieke stamceltransplantatie bij sikkelcelziekte besproken. Daarnaast wordt ingegaan op de effecten van transplantatie op sikkelcelziekte-gerelateerde complicaties en toekomstperspectieven.
